CLEAR Approach Framework

The CLEAR Approach

Early childhood professionals face an ongoing challenge: how to balance exploratory, play-based learning with direct, explicit instruction in literacy skills. Leaning too far in either direction can disadvantage learners. Play-only approaches risk leaving children underprepared, while overly academic instruction can limit opportunities for social and emotional development. CLEAR was designed to bridge this gap.

The CLEAR Approach is an instructional design framework for inclusive literacy instruction that supports early childhood professionals in teaching foundational literacy skills aligned with the Science of Reading. Rooted in research, CLEAR is the instructional lens that defines how literacy skills are taught, while the curriculum defines what is taught. CLEAR works with any curriculum, integrating seamlessly with existing materials without requiring new programs or additional resources. Its five interconnected components—Child-Centered, Learner-Led, Engaging, Active, and Rapport Building—serve as design lenses that guide educators and specialists in making direct, explicit instruction naturally exploratory, playful, and inclusive.

Why CLEAR Matters

Across today’s early learning environments, learners bring a wide range of abilities, interests, and needs—including multilingual, gifted, and special needs learners, as well as those whose challenges may be less visible. To help every learner thrive, instruction must be inclusive. The CLEAR Approach offers a practical, research-informed way to make that happen. Through its five interconnected components, early childhood professionals can bring together explicit teaching and playful exploration—creating learning experiences that are naturally inclusive.

HOW CLEAR WORKS

As CLEAR Implementation Consultants, we partner with you to embed the CLEAR Approach framework into daily practice. Each Implementation Cycle is intentionally structured with a defined beginning and end, ensuring leaders and practitioners understand what will be implemented, how progress will be measured, and what outcomes to expect.

We often hear, “That sounds great in theory, but it will not work with my students.” CLEAR Implementation Cycles were designed to answer those questions—by demonstrating strategies in action within real educational environments. Early childhood educators and professionals apply the framework in their own settings, receive in-the-moment support, and build confidence using CLEAR in authentic contexts.
